A bottle of dandelion and gentian bitter tonic with fresh herbs

Ingredients

Dried dandelion root, gentian root, and honey
  • Dried Dandelion Root
    Taraxacum officinale
    2 tablespoons
Chopped, or use 4 tablespoons fresh root
  • Dried Gentian Root
    Gentiana lutea
    1 tablespoon
Chopped, or use 2 tablespoons fresh root
  • Water
    2 cups
    Filtered preferred
  • Honey
    Apis mellifera
    1 tablespoon
Raw honey preferred, optional for sweetness

Instructions

1

Prepare Ingredients

Measure 2 tablespoons of dried and chopped dandelion root and 1 tablespoon of dried and chopped gentian root. Pour 2 cups of water into a saucepan.

2

Boil Water

Place the saucepan on the stove and set it to medium-high heat. Wait until the water comes to a rolling boil.

3

Add Roots

Add the dried dandelion and gentian roots to the boiling water. Reduce the heat to low.

4

Simmer

Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This step lets the roots infuse their bitterness into the water, creating the tonic.

5

Cool

Remove the saucepan from the heat source. Let the mixture cool naturally to room temperature.

6

Strain

Strain the liquid into a glass container or bottle.

7

Sweeten

If you prefer a sweeter taste, add 1-2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup to the tonic. Stir well.

Notes

Start with a small dosage, as the bitterness can be intense, and adjust to your preference. Shake the bottle before each use, as the herbs may settle at the bottom. If you have known allergies to dandelion or gentian, avoid using this tonic.

Dosage

Take 1-2 tablespoons of this bitter tonic before meals to aid digestion.
